Fifteen days in Italy's sun-baked heel — whitewashed Ostuni, the trulli of Alberobello, sea caves at Polignano a Mare, and Matera's ancient stone city. Home base: two masserie (fortified farm estates), one with its own beach on the Mediterranean.

This is slow Italy: winery lunches, a mini-cruise off the Salento coast, a cooking class with the hotel's head chef — and lunch in the Basile family home, where mamma Basile cooks Altamura's specialties herself. Pasta al forno, grilled meats, formaggi, vino e Padre Peppe.
